Shetland Islands
The Shetland Islands lie about 96km/60 miles north of the
Orkney Islands. This
group is made up of about 100 islands, of which 29 are
populated. The largest of the islands is known as Mainland.
To reach the Orkneys, ferries run from:
- Aberdeen to Lerwick (10-13 hours)
- Kirkwall, Orkney Mainland, to Lerwick (6-7 hours)
As an alternative to the ferry, flights to Sumburgh Airport are available
from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Wick and the Kirkwall Airport on Orkney
Mainland.
Muckle Flugga, an uninhabited island, is the most northern
point of the British Isles.
A Broch at Mousa stands at 13m (43ft) high.
