Iona

Iona is a small island that lies off the south west coast of Mull. It is reached by the ferry that runs from Fionnphort on its larger neighbour.

St. Columba arrived from Ireland in 563 AD and founded a monastery.

An Augustinian nunnery was founded c.1200 - this has been partially restored.

The Benedictine abbey church was restored between 1875 and 1910 and the monastic buildings from 1938 to 59.

The island became a destination for pilgrims and also the burial place for Scottish kings until the 12th century.
