Caithness

Located in the extreme northeast of Scotland, this area, despite being part of the northern Highlands, is very much like the central lowlands in character.

It was once part of the Earldom of Orkney and therefore under Norse rule. In 1468 it came under Scottish rule when James III married the daughter of the king of Norway and Denmark.

The main towns in the area are Wick and Thurso.
