Loch Lomond

Eastern Side

Access to the eastern side of Loch Lomond by car is restricted to say the least. From Drymen, near the southeast corner, the B837 runs to Balmaha at the side of the loch. From there a narrow road runs alongside the loch to Rowardennan and on to the foot of Ben Lomond. Alternatively the B829 from Aberfoyle heads roughly northwest where a narrow road continues west to Inversnaid. All of this allows access, by car, to less than a half of the eastern side of the loch.

By foot it’s a different matter. The West Highland Way is a long distance walk that links Milngavie, north of Glasgow, to Fort William, in the Highlands. The route makes use of old drove and Military Road as well as other, more modern, routes. It also follows closely to the eastern side of Loch Lomond from Balmaha, through Rowardennan and Inversnaid, to the northern tip of the loch. So while there may not be roads suitable for cars all the way along the eastern side, it is still possible to see the entire length of the loch.
