Clackmannan
Clackmannan is located to the north of the River Forth and southeast of
Alloa; it was once the county town of
Clackmannanshire and is one of the most historic towns in Scotland.
The town takes its name from the Clack, or Stone,
of Mannan that stands next to the Mercat Cross and
the bell tower; the latter is all that remains of the Tolbooth of 1592. In the 16th century the local sheriff constructed the
town's Tolbooth because he was tired of putting up prisoners in his own home; only the belfry tower remains today.
To the west of the town is Clackmannan Tower, which stands on King's Seat
Hill; the tower is a 14th century structure built by descendants of Robert the
Bruce. King Malcolm IV had a house here in the 12th century, on the site of the
present Clackmannan Tower.
