Stirling Castle
Layout
 The
approach to Stirling Castle is over the Esplanade. This
was an area of ground kept clear to allow the castle's defenders see clearly who
was approaching. It was set out as a parade ground in 1809.
Statues
in the esplanade are the memorial to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who
used the castle as their base, and Robert the Bruce.
Beyond the esplanade is the plain front of the Outer Defences - on the most vulnerable side of the
castle.
