Spean Bridge

Spean Bridge is located north of Fort William, at the point where the A82 crosses the River Spean, hence the name. The present bridge that carries the road across the river was built by Thomas Telford in 1819. This replaced General Wade's High Bridge built in 1736 and that partially collapsed in 1913; the remains of this bridge stand to the west. It was near the old bridge that the first skirmish in the 1745 Jacobite Rising took place; two companies of Government troops we surprised and captured by a small group of Highlanders, said to number only 10 men!

From Spean Bridge the A82 continues north through the Great Glen, while the A86 heads east following the river through Glen Spean.

A mile from Spean Bridge, following the A82, is the Commando Memorial, which commemorates the men who trained in the area during World War II. This spot gives great views of the area, especially of the Nevis Range to the south.

From the memorial the B8004 leads west to Gairlochy and then heads south west, following the Caledonian Canal, to Banavie where it then joins the A830 Road to the Isles. From Gairlochy the B8005 heads north and west to Loch Arkaig and the Chia Aig Falls. A narrow road then continues along the northern side of the loch.
