Loch Morar

Loch Morar is the deepest loch in Scotland at over 300m/1000ft - a depth that is not reached for over one hundred and thirty miles west in the Atlantic, where the floor of the ocean pitches down at the continental shelf.

The River Morar, which flows from the dam at the western end of the loch, is only a quarter of a mile long making it the shortest river in Britain. The water used to fall thirty feet between the loch and river until the hydro-electric dam was built.

Loch Morar also has it's own monster, Morag - also referred to as the Great Worm. Sightings of Morag are believed to herald the death of a member of the local MacDonald clan!

The islands on the loch are:

  • Eilean Allmha
  • Eilean Bàn
  • Eilean nam Breac
  • Brinacory Island
  • Eilean Ghibbi
  • An t-Eilean Meadhoin
  • Eilean a' Phidhir
  • Eilean nan Reithean
