Loch Leven, Highland
This 17km (11 mile) long loch stretches from Kinlochleven
in the east to Loch Linnhe. The bridge between South and North Ballachulish, at the western end of the loch,
taking the A82 between Glen Coe and Fort William, replaced the ferry. An alternative
route is to follow the B863 from Glencoe village, east to Kinlochleven and then
west again to North Ballachulish where it joins
the A82.
From South Ballachulish the A828 heads south west, along
the shore of Loch Linnhe, through Appin - the area between Loch Leven and Glen
Creran. The road crosses Loch Creran, into Benderloch, and continues south west
to the bridge over Loch Etive at Connel - here it joins the A85 that heads south
west to Oban.
The River Leven flows from the Blackwater Reservoir into
Loch Leven. The reservoir was formed when the Black Water was damned to provide
power to the aluminium works at Kinlochleven - established 1905-9 and closed in
2000. Power is now provided to the Lochaber Aluminium Smelter in Fort William - the surplus goes to the National
Grid.
