Inverness Castle

Inverness Castle stands on a cliff overlooking the River Ness with St. Andrew's Cathedral on the opposite bank.

The original fort, believed to have been made of wood, was built c.1057. This early fort is one of the many places that claim to be where Duncan killed MacBeth.

The first stone tower was completed in 1548 and reinforced in 1725 by General Wade following the first Jacobite uprising. In 1746 the castle was destroyed by Bonnie Prince Charlie. The well and part of a wall were all that remained.

The present castle was built in 1835, on the site of the earlier fortress, with a second building, the jail, completed in 1848. The statue of Flora MacDonald in front of the was erected castle in 1899.

The building is mainly used as the Sheriff's Court now, but the Drum Tower is open to the public.
