Glen Shiel

This is the valley running south east from Loch Duich, between the Five Sisters of Kintail, with Sgurr Fhuaran their highest peak, and the ridge that includes The Saddle.

In the 1719 Jacobite Rising the Spanish and Highland army was defeated at Shiel Bridge. Nearby Sgurr nan Spainteach (Peak of the Spaniards) was named in memory of the Spanish.

On the south shore of Loch Duich the road from Shiel Bridge to Glenelg, following the route of the Military Road, goes over the pass of Bealach Ratigan - a height of 39m (1116 ft).
