Glenfinnan

Glenfinnan is situated at the head of Loch Shiel, about 19 miles west of Fort William following the A830 Road to the Isles.

This is where Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, raised his standard on 19th August, 1745. Torr a'Choit, the hill behind the visitor centre, is believed to be where this actually took place. A monument stands at the shore of the loch to commemorate this event.

In 1901 the twenty-one arch Glenfinnan Viaduct was built to carry the West Highland Railway on its way from Fort William to Mallaig; this was one of the first large constructions to be made of concrete. However, it is probably more famous now for the steam train in it's Hogwarts Express colours in the Harry Potter films.
