Ballachulish

In the 18th and 19th centuries slate was quarried here - the largest slate quarry in Scotland.

The bridge that crosses Loch Leven, at the narrow western end where it enters Loch Linnhe, was opened in 1975 - replacing the ferry that ran here.

There is a memorial near the southern end of the bridge for James Stewart who was also known as Seamus a Ghlinne, James of the Glen. Stewart was convicted for the murder of Colin Campbell, known as the Red Fox, in 1752 and was hung on the gallows at Cnap a'Chaolais - despite being innocent. When his body was finally taken down, after hanging there for 3 years, the gibbet was also torn down. This event, known as the Appin Murder, featured in Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped while the trial and execution appeared in follow-up, Catriona. Legend has it that the identity of the real murderer was known by a select few, including Stewart himself.

A cairn, Cairn Murt na H'Appain, was also erected where the murder took place.

In 1880 an Iron Age figurine, made of oak wood, was found in a peat bog.
