Southern Highlands

The approach for the majority of people into the Highlands of Scotland is from the south, across Rannoch Moor into Glen Coe. At the mouth to the Glen, a minor road heads southwest through Glen Etive, following the River Etive to the loch of the same name.

From Glen Coe there are two possible routes to follow - the first follows the south side of Loch Leven west to Ballachulish; the second follows the loch east to Kinlochleven and then heads west along the northern side of the loch. Both routes meet up at the Ballachulish Bridge, which crosses Loch Leven near where it joins Loch Linnhe. The road then follows the western side of Loch Linnhe north to Fort William.

From Fort William there are a further two options. The first is to follow the Road to the Isles west to Mallaig; the second is to head northwest through the Great Glen to Inverness. A further option for the journey is to follow the route of the A9 from Perth through the eastern Highlands to Inverness.
