The abbey was founded in 1136 by David I for the Cistercian order and was dedicated in 1146. The current building dates mainly from the 15th century.

In 1322 it was sacked by the English army of Edward II – Robert the Bruce helped with the rebuild.

The abbey church was built between 1385 and 1590 and served as a monastery for over 400 years was used until 1810. The current building dates mainly from the 15th century.

It is the burial place of Alexander II and also of Robert the Bruce’s heart.

The Commendator’s House now houses a museum.

To the rear of the House is the Mill Lade, which was created to bring water to the abbey from the River Tweed.
