HawickHawick is situated on the River Teviot. Drumlanrig, the Black Tower, was built in the 16th century. It is now used as a museum, but was once a hotel - Walter Scott and William Wordsworth were amongst its guests. The Common Riding festival is held in June. At Caerlanrig, to the southwest of Hawick, Johnny Armstrong, the Laird of Gilnockie and also known as Black Jock, was killed, along with about 40 of his men, by James V. From Hawick there are a number of possible routes to Jedburgh. The most direct route would be to follow the A698 northeast and then head east on the B6358 or, possibly a quicker route, to continue on the A698 to join the A68 north of Jedburgh. Another alternative would be to follow the A6088 southeast to Carter Bar, on the border with England, and from there follow the A68 roughly north to Jedburgh. |
