Carter Bar

There is nothing here. There is no reason to stop. Well, there is really. The A68, which runs from Edinburgh, through the Scottish Borders, south to Darlington, climbs to a height of 418m/1370ft in the Cheviot Hills. With the land falling away on either side, the view is fantastic.

Most people drive through Carter Bar without even realising they had done so. However, two stones on either side of the A68 mark the reason this place exists. On each of these stones are two words – one facing north and the other south. The words facing north say England and the others say Scotland. The only other sign by the road says Welcome to Scottish Borders.
