Border Marches
The Marches was the name given to the areas either side of the border
between Scotland and England. These were split either side into East, Middle and
West with the three areas being roughly opposite each other. Due to the nature
of the relations between the two countries, border clashes became a common
occurrence. There were also clashes between families in different Marches
on the same side of the border. In an attempt to keep come sort of control over
the areas, Wardens were assigned to enforce the law.
Sitting roughly between the Scottish and English West Marches was a
lawless area known as the Debatable Lands. Measuring over 12 miles long
by about 4 miles wide, this area of land was so called as both countries
disputed ownership, neither wanting to assume responsibility. In 1552 it was
decided to split the Debatable Lands between Scotland and England and,
with the assistance of a French arbitrator, the border was marked by the
creation of the Scots Dyke.
