The Pevensey Guides is a series of full-colour guide books that cover relatively small areas of Scotland in great detail. There are separate books for:

Loch Lomond & the Trossachs
Ben Nevis & Glen Coe
North-West Highlands
Fife & Perthshire
The Cairngorms

as well as Pevensey Island Guides for:

The Isle of Arran
Mull & Iona
Bute
The Uists & Barra
Lewis & Harris
The Isle of Man
Shetland
Orkney
Kintyre
Skye
Islay

Each is well written and the photos are generally very good - many being full or even double page! However, they aren't pocket guides, but worth reading before you go on a trip - or even taking along to browse before you go sight seeing! As well as the places to visit each book gives details of the history as well as details on the wildlife and various plants to be found. The Useful Information section not only gives details of tourist information contacts, but also refers to places worth visiting in the area (although some books give more detail than others!)

Overall, in my opinion, these books are worth a look and not too expensive - prices range from £8 to £10 (although many can be found cheaper - such as on Amazon.co.uk!)

I couldn't agree with you more Bruce. I myself have the ones from Skye and Islay (of course) and I always enjoy reading them. The photography is actually great and the text is very pleasant to read. I can really recommend these guides, specially if you consider the price at Amazon, and it's certainly worth it to take a look at a used copy. I ordered some used Islay maps a while back with a good discount and when the maps arrived they looked as if they had never been used so I had a real bargain :D

I'd rather be on Islay but Jura is great as well!

I actually have 10 of the books now (all apart from North-West Highlands, The Uists & Barra, Lewis & Harris, The Isle of Man, Shetland and Orkney!) and have read 9 of those (just The Cairngorms to go!)

Now that I think about it, I think it was you Ron that recommended the Islay book to me!

I wouldn't be surprised if I did :D

Maybe I can recommend a newspaper as well here? The Ileach just won the Newspaper of the Year award. The Ileach is the written newspaper on Islay that get's distributed as a PDF as well around the world. You can find more news on the Islay Weblog. They offered me the opportunity the be the first to publish the news. 8)

That's great news for the Ileach - and good news for you being the first to tell the news!
