Had a lovely day today, and on the way home we decided to go along the Fife coast to Aberdour as we both love the beach there.... On parking the car and walking towards the beach I couldn't believe my eyes at what I saw..... As you can see from the photo the beach was a total mess and a disgrace. So here is a message to the litter louts who couldn't be bothered to take all the rubbish to the bins provided " Stay in your own gardens in future and keep the mess in there" I am stick of the litter that gets left behind by mindless people in this beautiful country of ours.....

I couldn't have said it better Linda. I've been visiting that beach for years (since I was a kid!) and have never before seen it in the state it was today... and the photo only shows a small amount of the rubbish that had been dumped all along the beach!

Just seen this in the entry for Aberdour on wiki:

Quote:
The Silver Sands... is one of Scotland's seven "Blue flag" awarded beaches, which denotes an exemplary standard of cleanliness...

The above photo was taken on those very same Silver Sands... so much for the Blue Flag! :(

Yesterday we decided to take a wander over to Cramond Island (which is a walk I would recommend to everyone!), but it seems the Litter Louts had beat us there... and there was some evidence of them having been on Cramond beach too!

To help highlight the problem Linda has set up a facebook group: Scotland yes .... Litter NO!

Thats the big problem Anne, its not set people who are littering. You have families and school kids who are trashing everywhere. What chance have we got of trying to educate these people when clearly the older members of families don't care enough!

Its great that you went to the bother of contacting the local council, but then what a let down when they don't bother to acknowledge you!

McDonald's and other fast food outlets need to take some responsibility as well for their customer's actions!

Why should we put up with this?

Same problem over here. There are recycling yards every few miles which take anything , free of charge, and still when you travel some back roads over here you find black bags full of rubbish, sofas, mattresses, bottles and all sorts of stuff dumped inthe ditches. I don't know if it's a problem in Scotland but over here you will get animal carcasses ( farm animals ) dumped regularly by the roadside which can cause a terrible problem ( not to mention smell ) in the summer. I guess the farmers are to cheap to rent a digger to bury them which is what they are legally obliged to do. The world is and will always be full of care-free scumbags!

Really horrible, I remember a few weeks ago when we travelled from Stirling to Dalmally and stopped at a parking near a nice loch. The shores were a disgrace, so much litter I couldn't believe my eyes. Aren't these people proud of their country? I don't want to speak for all tourists but I think that it's the locals that are doing the littering and not so much the tourists, or am I wrong here?

Ron, judging by the amount of litter that's being dropped throughout the year I think its safe to say that its not the tourists that are the main culprits... tho that's not to say that all tourists are innocent; of course, being a tourist and being a Scot are not always two different things, so some of the Scots touring around need to show respect to other areas of their country!

I also remember a beach in Kintyre, Machrihanish if I remember correctly.... there is a sign at the entrance gate telling people that the owners of fouling dogs will be fined for 500 pounds!! They should put these signs up at more places in Scotland, perhaps that would scare people off. The beach with the sign looked immaculate :-)

And you are right Bruce, of course some tourists are to blame as well but they come to admire the beauty of Scotland, it's therefore hard to imagine they would leave so much litter.

Anyway, there are a lot of unspoilt places in Scotland with hardly any litter :)

I've never seen much litter on Machrihanish either Ron, or on loads of other beaches around the country; and most loch sides seem to be relatively clear. However, judging by the number of organised litter picks that take place almost everywhere you can think of, it seems the problem is widespread... and, yes, I do believe that people who live locally are mostly to blame!

Quote:
RUBBISH flushed and dumped in the sea by the public and industry is costing Scotland's fishing and tourism sectors at least £17 million a year and levels of waste are threatening the Scottish Government's green targets, a report reveals. The Marine Scotland study found that beach and coast users are the worst culprits for litter and that plastics have become the biggest threat to the environment and the coastal and maritime economy, which is worth at least £2.2 billion a year and supports 50,000 jobs not including the oil industry.

Undersea and coastal wildlife tourism, sailing and sea angling are among the key leisure activities being hit by litter including plastic bags, food containers, fishing gear and debris from ships. The report said marine litter threatens targets including reducing waste significantly by 2020 and may "impact upon Scotland's Strategic Objectives, most notably the drive to become a Greener, Wealthier and Fairer, Safer and Stronger and Healthier Scotland".

The full story can be read in The Herald and while the £17m might be difficult to prove the fact is a large amount of rubbish lying around does deter people from visiting certain areas... tho the people responsible for the rubbish at Aberdour's Silver Sands didn't seem too bothered; then again it was THEIR rubbish!
