Residents of the Scots village of Dull have proved they have a sense of humour by forging a plan to create formal links with the US town of Boring. In a move which is unlikely to set pulses racing, the Perthshire village and the Oregon logging town are discussing linking to become Dull and Boring.

Locals from around the Dull area became aware of the equally-unfortunately named American town and decided to pursue a smile-inducing formal link-up. Officials in Boring were approached about forming a partnership and the idea is to be formally put in front of the US town's planning organisation in a month's time.

Residents of the Perthshire village of Dull are due to hear this week whether efforts to forge ties with the US town of Boring have been successful. Officials in Oregon are set to vote on whether the two places should become "sister communities".

If the vote is passed, the community council in Dull insists it could have real benefits for the Scottish village. Marjorie Keddie, the chairwoman of Dull and Weem Community Council, said the result of the vote was likely to become known in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The US town of Boring in Oregon has voted in favour of "pairing" with the village of Dull in Perthshire. Boring decided for the move in the interests of trans-Atlantic relations, tourism and humour, after being approached by residents in Dull. The decision means both places can sell novelty tourist items, get quirky road signs made and plan exchange visits.

Community council chairwoman Marjorie Keddie said: "We are also excited at the prospect of a new road sign, which will say something like 'Dull, in association with Boring' or 'in sisterhood with Boring'. I'm sure it will stop a few people in their tracks for photos."

“THERE’S never a dull moment in Dull!” exclaimed councilwoman Marjorie Keddie yesterday as she unveiled Scotland’s newest, and most eye-catching road sign. After several months of anxious negotiation, the 84 residents of this tiny Perthshire village have made it official. They are no longer Dull. They are now Dull and Boring.

The news that the village of Dull, near Aberfeldy, was to pair with the town of Boring in Oregon, USA, has made headlines around the world. And yesterday, with the blessing of Perth & Kinross Council, they were granted an official village sign to commemorate the momentous event. Later in the evening there was a street party, with tables and gazebos lining the village’s one and only street weighed down with homebaked banoffee tarts and cheese straws, as well as a few celebratory bottles of bubbly.
