STV wants to find out who the nation really thinks is our biggest hero. We've already asked a panel of experts, led by the Right Honourable Sir Menzies Campbell CBE QC MP, to come up with a shortlist of 30. But are they the right ones? Have they missed anybody out?

Over the last two weeks the Daily Record and STV asked the Scottish Public to nominate five more names who they think should be on the list; the People's Choice to add to the expert's choice.

More information (as well as the names of those nominated) can be found on STV's Greatest Scot!

The 5 nominations from the public have now been announced:

* Alex Harvey
* David Tennant
* Sir William Alexander Smith
* Annie Lennox
* Sir Sean Connery

With those 5 names added to the original 30, its now time to start voting. I've also added the same 35 names to a poll here to see how our "Greatest Scot" compares with the one decided from the tv series... unlike that poll, we each get 2 votes!

I'd also be interested to see if anyone would have nominated anyone else... or are those 5 the ones you would have expected? I think David Tennant was a fairly obvious choice, but I was kind of expecting Sir Sean to be among the original 30; I also half expected to see Sir Walter Scott there.

J K Rowling - where was she born again? She ain't a Scot and shouldn't be nominated, especially ahead of Sir Walter Scott.

Jacobite you beat me to it, I was going to post a comment about this....personally I think its a joke that they would even consider a English woman as a great Scot.... maybe others will think differently but this is my opinion and im sticking to it.... :evil:

I agree Allan; its supposed to be The Greatest SCOT, not The Greatest Person that has Lived in Scotland! :roll:

Another point is that it depends how you define "greatness". Quite a number of names that appear on the list are from the scientific and medical fields, and their work, much of it pioneering, was instrumental in bringing benefits to mankind which carry on down to the present day. I don't really see how this can be compared to the contribution made by sports and entertainment celebrities, which is quite frankly trivial in comparison. It is chalk and cheese.

You're right Lorn, the people who have contributed to science (and in particular medicine) probably do deserve the accolade more, which might explain why 50% of the votes cast so far have gone to that group of people! As you say, the contribution of the rest is trivial in comparison, but what they have achieved in their own fields cannot be taken away from them... and chances are many of those people will get votes because they are better known than the scientists! Maybe the voting would have been more meaningful if it had been by category?

There's still a week left to vote for the Greatest Scot... or you could nominate someone that you feel should have been included!

Just remember that if you vote to use both at the same time otherwise you will lose one!

Just read this definition that was apparently used by the "panel" in defining who could be nominated as a Great Scot:

Quote:
A Great Scot is defined as anyone who is born in Scotland or anyone who lived or lives in Scotland who has played a significant and lasting contribution to Scotland or humanity at large.

Who agrees with this definition? Or do you think a Great Scot should actually be someone who IS actually Scottish? I know which one I would personally go for! :whistling:

If you are born in Scotland you are a Scot. I you are born outwith Scotland you are not a Scot.

My humble opinion.

Sir John Soulis, (died in France c.1310) sole Guardian of Scotland during the Wars of Independence.

There were two John Soulis's, the other, probably one of his nephews, dying in Ireland with Edward Bruce in 1318. Thomas Soulis, rebel, died around 1304 and William, Grand Butler of Scotland, was imprisoned in 1320. Their sister Ermingarde was the first wife of Patrick Dunbar.

Or so I've been told.

Marjorie Dunbar nee Comyn She held Dunbar Castle for Scotland against her husband Patrick Dunbar and his king, Edward II in 1296.
Was her tenant, Alan Wallace, there beside her?

What happened to her??????

Voting is now closed for this, both here and on the original STV poll. The question now is whether our winner (Robert Burns) matches the one produced by the STV (which will be revealed on 30th November, St. Andrew's Day).

Another question that I think needs to be asked is: did Burns win because he is the Greatest Scot or because he's (one of) the best known?

I didn't vote for him on this poll but since I have looked into his work I did vote for him in the STV Poll. He is James Clerk Maxwell, who as Einstein said, was founder of the modern world. His work as a physicist paved the way for Hertz, Marconi, Einstein himself, and others to study theoretical and quantum physics. He was not just an inventor and excellent teacher at university, but his intellect was well in advance of that of his peers, leading to future advances.
