Camusfearna (Bay of Alders) was the name that Gavin Maxwell gave to Sandaig Bay when he wrote "Ring of Bright Water"

The bay is pretty isolated. reached either by sea or a very winding path through the forest. whichever way you arrive it is worth it.
Of Maxwells house, there is no trace, only the 2 memorials. One to Edal the Otter

inscription reads;EDAL OTTER OF RING OF BRIGHT WATER 1958-1968. whatever joy she gave to you, give back to nature
The other stone marks where Gavin Maxwells ashes are buried and stands where his writing desk was.

the old fishing bothy still stands at the other side of the bay across the machair that is studded with Flag Iris.

If you follow the stream up you come to a couple of waterfalls in the gorge that the Otters in the books liked to play. The gorge is pretty narrow & steep so take care if you do venture up there.

We camped in the bay for a couple of days and each day saw other people treking in from the road or arriving by boat.
2 boats in the bay with Skye (Sleat) in the middle distance and the cliffs of Rum in the background

But by late afternoon all had left leaving us to enjoy the peace and tranquillity. There are still otters in the bay though we never saw them the was traces over on the islands.
at the end of our stay we canoed along the coast to Glenelg in glorious conditions but I will save those pics for another post.

Thank you Bruce. Glad you like them. you will probably be sick of my contributions before long...

I am currently working on a ship in the North Sea and the bandwidth is limited so the attachements have been hugely reduced. av file size for the originals is 5mb...

Am I correct in thinking Comp contribution can be emailed, if so what is the max size for the images.

They can be - to photos@ourscotland.co.uk! We set a limit of 800 pixels wide/high, but you can send them in whatever size suits as we can resize them if required!

Beautiful photos AJ, I particularly like the Gorge and the Sunset, you must see some fabulous sunsets out there, and some really awful weather. I know you must have some terrible storms, but do they photograph well :?: I ask, because there is no land line to show just how awe inspiring they can be.
Take care,
Avril
