Halloween saw my g/f and friends head to Faskally for the the lightshow and spend the weekend at Tummel bridge. I decided to join them on the Sat and on the Sunday as they slept on I went to climb Schiehallion, a hill I have long wanted to do.

It was misty when I left Tummel Bridge but did not take long to leave the mist behind in the valley and find Shiehallion basking in the early morning sunshine.

Arriving at the empty car park just after 08:00 it looked like I had the hill to myself.
And this is how it turned out. I never saw a soul until I was making my way back down
On the way up I had some fanastic views of the Tummel Valley filled with a duvet like layer of cloud and clear views to the north & east.

Higher up the hill on the ridge leading to the summit I had the good fortune to view the effect known as the "Brocken Spectre" where your giant shadow is cast onto clouds below with stunning hallow effect round the head.

Just before I reached the summit
my boot sole decided to part company with the upper but after a bit of a bodge repair using my scarf I was able to continue to top out with no further problems.

by 13:30 I was enjoying a pint in the Strath Tummel Hotel looking back at Schiehallion with its summit now shrouded in mist... all in all great day on a great hill.

Fantastic good fortune seeing a Brocken Spectre. First time I did Schiehallion many years ago (and long before the days of GPS) there was zero visibility on ths summit ridge, and it wasn't until I revisited in clear weather, some years later, that I was able to confirm that the place I'd turned back on my first trip as indeed the summit...
