It is known to millions of walkers throughout the world as a 95-mile pathway through some of Scotland’s greatest scenery. But from yesterday, the West Highland Way officially became one mile longer.

The new 96-mile route, which begins in Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow, will finish in the less salubrious surroundings of the west end of Fort William High Street. After many years of discussion the route is to be extended from a roundabout, on the outskirts of Fort William, to the west end of the town’s high street.

The full story can be read in The Herald!

Ending it at at a point from which everyone would have to walk on into FW anyway always seemed mad.

But changing the end to the WEST end of FW High Street seems equally mad. Walkers heading to the railway station will have to go past the station to the end of the walk, through a street that looks much line any other shopping street in any other town, then double back through the same shopping street to the station. It looks like a transparent attempt to force footweary folk to shop.

The railway station or, as someone has suggested at the foot of the article, the remains of the old fort on the banks of the loch not far from the station (and where the Great Glen Way begins) would be far better.

I agree Ken, it does make sense to have to the walk finish near the station or (in the interest in promoting a lesser known historical building) at the remains of the fort... the latter definitely makes sense if that is where the Great Glen Way starts!
