Thanks for this Bruce,
I've contacted the Ayrshire Post and Daily Record as well as West Sound Radio already and asked others to use their contacts with other papers and stations but I'll start to contact as many as I can from now until Burns Night.
If we get enough people talking before and during the 25th January we should be laughing.

Thanks again for the list.

Cheers, Geoff

You're welcome Aulyin! By the way, I have added a link to the petition as your signature... that way we don't have to keep looking for the last post that mentions it.

Thanks Bruce.
I'll have to learn to do that (and attach photos).

190 signatures added to the petition in 19 days is fantastic.

Hope this helps:

The Robert Burns International Airport isn't a new idea but this time the public lead. From The Times January 24, 2003 The man's a goldmine, for a' that. By Shirley English
"THE poet Robert Burns died with debts of £14 and assets of just £15 but he is now worth £157 million a year to the Scottish economy.
However, the Scottish national bard’s 200-year-old legacy is not achieving its full commercial potential, according to Lesley Campbell, an economic consultant for the World Bank."

If Scotland stylishly promoted "Robert Burns" how much more would be added to the Scottish economy?

Robert Burns in a Transatlantic Context -- April 7-9, 2009
Simon Fraser University, Harbour Centre

Quote:
2009 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns. Recognizing Burns’s global importance and hoping to attract members of the diaspora back to Scotland to celebrate his birthday, the Scottish government has also declared 2009 to be the year of Homecoming; Burns is, after all, worth 157 million pounds a year to the Scottish economy. The Centre for Scottish Studies is celebrating Burns this year by hosting a series of public events and an academic workshop on Robert Burns in a Transatlantic Context which will highlight Burns in the Americas, where he has had arguably his greatest impact.

Wait a minute. Did I not write:
Quote:
THE poet Robert Burns died with debts of £14 and assets of just £15 but he is now worth £157 million a year to the Scottish economy.
From The Times January 24, 2003

Surely the figure has changed in 6 years?
And how much did he bring in during 2009?

Aulyin, you certainly wrote at one point that Burns is worth £3 million a week to the Scottish economy, but I am still waiting for some evidence for that figure!

We have been told since, at least, 2003, as shown above, that RB has brought £157m to the Scottish economy.

£157,000,000 (a year) devided by 52 (weeks) = £3,000,000+

Cheers, Aulyin

The sums certainly work out, but unfortunately that doesn't actually show me the evidence for either the £3m a week or the £157m a year! The websites you listed above (one of which is actually a broken link) don't say where these figures are derived from... and neither do any of the other links I have found (so far) that mention the same £157m!

As an aside, I have to wonder how much Eilean Donan Castle brings to the Scottish economy... after all it features on the front of more calendars, shortbread tins, books, etc than any other Scottish icon (including Burns!)

I did query the figure a couple of pages ago Bruce. I took it for granted that Visit Scotland and Diageo knew what they were talking about 5 years ago. I'll try and find out where the figures originate.

I fixed the link you mentioned.

Last night I contacted some papers as well... both the Ayrshire Post and Daily Record as you did Aulyin, but I also sent details of the petition to The Scotsman and The Guardian. As well as that I contacted West Sound, Real Radio and Central FM... of those only Real Radio have been back in touch so hopefully it will get a mention on air (or even on their website)!

I have also included a link to the petition at the top of the forum and also on the side of the screen on the site's home page!

A link to the petition and discussion has also been added to Google Wave!

One of those days. Petition stuck at 219 today.

I'm struggling for ideas now Bruce.
You've done a fantastic job and it's now up to the public to put their opinions forward.

Haven't heard from any politicians so far. :whistling:
I was talking to one of the heads of an Ayrshire Burns club who hadn't heard of the GoPetition, so it makes me wonder if the message is getting across. Hopefully your contacts will do the trick.

Cheers, Aulyin

Aulyin, Scotland from the Roadside (both the site and forum) have a limited audience so the more this can be spread around (either online on sites like twitter, etc or by word of mouth) the better it will be in the long run... so if you speak to or hear of someone who doesn't know about it then get their contact details and make sure they find out (especially someone connected to one of the Burns clubs!)

Did RB bring in £157million of the £176million mentioned here by Irene Oldfather?
Quote:
As an Ayrshire MSP, I focus my remarks on the significance of the debate for Ayrshire and my constituency. Last year, tourism in Ayrshire was worth £176 million, and employed 11 per cent of the total workforce. The top visitor attractions were mainly connected with historic buildings, visitor parks or museums. I am sure that it comes as no surprise to members that some of the most visited places are connected with our great bard Robert Burns. Those include the Burns cottage in Alloway, the Burns national heritage centre and the Burns museum. In addition, we have Culzean, Brodick and Dean castles, as well as Dundonald castle, to which the minister referred, each of which has different attributes and a different place in our history.
I will also mention Eglinton country park, the ancient home of the Montgomerie and Eglinton families, and Vikingar, the museum that tells the story of the battle of Largs against the Vikings in 1263. The potential for such sites is evident, but the debate offers an important opportunity to consider how we ensure that the full potential of our historic environment is realised.
We know that 95 per cent of overseas tourists access Ayrshire by air, which is far greater than the 75 per cent average for Scotland as a whole, so it is clear that there is a link between Prestwick airport and tourism in Ayrshire. However, I was disappointed to note from recent published figures that, while passenger numbers for Edinburgh are increasing, the numbers at Prestwick are falling.

WOW!!! Give the man an airport.

Hi Bruce,
This still doesn't help much but:
Quote:
Robert Burns is of enormous value – socially and economically – to Scotland. A Scottish Executive commissioned study estimates that his legacy is worth around £157 million to the economy in terms of tourism and commemorative events, such is the legacy of Robert Burns’ work.
