Maybe you could offer some hints and tips on this as well as any useful sites you've found (you could add the details in Other Sites of Interest!)

Am I out of order, being a newby, to suggest a Genealogy 'section'?
With the diverse interests folk would have, I think it needs more than an odd link.

However, and rather than select one link out of hundreds, and, only because you raised the matter for discussion, perhaps then I'll offer this link: http://ourmissinglinks.proboards83.com/index.cgi
which is my own forum, though not Scotland specific.
If you see merit in it being posted, all well and good.

James.

I have considered that in the past, but don't think this forum is the best place for it... there are plenty sites out there that offer good advice! What I was thinking was more along the lines of a how to trace your family tree as opposed to helping people actually find their ancestors!

As for useful sites, that would include things like:

* scotlandspeople.gov.uk
* familysearch.org
* genesreunited.co.uk
* ancestry.com
* cyndislist.com
* rootsweb.com

and of course your own forum (as mentioned above)!

Good choices you've listed. I'll try and come up with some points of guidance for the forum (links where applicable), and pm you with my thoughts, before they're posted on open board. That be ok?

A brief guide on tracing your family tree has been added to the culture section of the forum!

Was drawn to this board. Disappointing there has not been the interest. However, as said earlier, there are other forums more dedicated to genealogy.
Co-incidentally, I posted a comment on Facebook today on this subject offering assistance if I can.

Will be interested to see whether it brings any more interest.

I DO think it's useful to have some mention of it on a forum such as this. Some of the more appropriate forums / useful FREE resources can often be difficult for the novice to find - sites like genesreunited, Ancestry etc coming foremost on Google/Bing searches.
