This time I'm taking no chances of people not hearing of this:

Homecoming Scotland 2014

According to a press release on the 25th of May there will be a second "Homecoming Scotland" in 2014.
Building on the success of the Year of Homecoming the Scottish Government will be staging the second formal celebration in 4 years.

Homecoming Scotland 2014 will take place in the year that Scotland hosts the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup and marks the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn. To see the press release go to: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Release ... 5/25113855

This time the south west needs to start promoting NOW!!!! and getting some of the grants that we didn't learn about until it was far to late the last time.

And by 2014 visitors will be landing at the renamed:

"THE ROBERT BURNS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Prestwick, SW Scotland".

2014 is the perfect year for major events in Scotland, but... another Homecoming in the same year as the Commonwealth Games? Maybe that's a bit much! Or maybe they should hold the Homecoming in Stirling (Bannockburn) as 2014 marks the 700th anniversary of the Greatest Scot's most famous victory! :D

The theory seems to be it ties in with Bannockburn 700, the Commonwealth games and the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, the aim, presumably, to fill the gaps between them.

And all because it has now been officially confirmed that Homecoming I was so successful that it contributed 500 trillion zillion pounds to the Scottish economy (OK, I made that bit up, but I'm not the first...)

I did wonder if tying it in with Bannockburn might seem a bit triumphalist. But the RAF still has a 617 Squadron (flying Tornado Gr4 ground attack aircraft) based at Lossiemouth, still known for most purposes as "The Dambusters", and still with the motto "Apres Moi, Le Deluge". I often wonder if there's ever a slightest twinge of embarrassment when they go on exchange visits to German air bases. Compared with that, going large on Bannockburn seven centuries after the event is the height of subtelty!

Ken, I think the amount of money that the original Homecoming actually made is a mystery to everyone... either that or its the greatest work of fiction that Scotland has produced in a long time!

Are the figures not due to be announced?

Anyway, is it Homecoming Bannockburn or Homecoming SCOTLAND?

The south west will be ready this time, without a doubt, no fears, aye we will......... :whistling:

You're right Aulyin, it is Homecoming Scotland... but I assume there will be another Gathering as part of it and, in my opinion, they may as well hold that at Bannockburn to coincide with the 700th anniversary of the battle!

Anyway, I hope the southwest will be ready this time... a bit of promotion of Robert the Bruce down that way will fit in nicely with the whole Bannockburn theme I have in my own mind!

"On the 25th of May 2010 the First Minister of Scotland announced the "Second Homecoming" in 2014.
Let's start talking about it NOW, not waiting until 2014.
Homecoming Scotland in 2009 was a success even though it was not promoted as much as it should have been.

So here we are, especially for you: The Unofficial Homecoming Scotland II Facebook; to give the promotion a wee boost." http://www.facebook.com/pages/Homecomin ... 2?ref=mf02

No afore time!!!!! : )

Not much life on the Homecoming Scotland II front.
I keep trying to find something from the Scottish Government telling us of their plans but they seem to have left us in Limbo.

I was hoping that the three main events :
The 40th Ryder Cup,
The 20th Commonwealth Games and
The 700th anniversary of Bannockburn
would be under the Homecoming Scotland II umbrella, saving everyone a great deal of money. Grants would be available for communities outwith the main event regions, so that Scotland as a whole would benefit.

I think one of the reasons that not too much is being made of Homecoming II is down to the bad publicity The Gathering brought (and is still bringing) to the original Homecoming! Two of the events mentioned by Aulyin (the Ryder Cup and the Commonwealth Games) don't really need anyone else to generate publicity for them... it would be more likely that the 2014 Homecoming would benefit from being mentioned in the same breath as them! I can see Bannockburn being promoted as the Gathering-type event, but I doubt the latter name will be used as too many people will still remember the original in a bad way!

Very good and strong points Bruce.
Who was to blame for the faults made by both Homecoming Scotland & The Gathering?

I live in the south west of Scotland and knew nothing of the Gathering until it 'happened'. I wouldn't have had foreword of Homecoming Scotland if I hadn't been at college doing a course in tourism. In fact it seems as though I was the only one in East Ayrshire who knew about it and bored locals to the back teeth talking about it.
Looking back at what I wrote back in 2007, I'm going on and on and on about the same points:

A budget of £3m will be made available for Scotland's second Homecoming extravaganza in two years time. The 2014 event will take place in the year of the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup, and the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

The first Homecoming in 2009 was said to have generated £53.7m for the Scottish economy. But the showpiece of that event, The Gathering 2009 Ltd, went bust after receiving £670,500 in taxpayers' cash.

The full story can be read on BBC Scotland News!

In a separate story from The Scotsman, Tattoo chief [Tom Chambers] headed for top Homecoming role:

Quote:
THE man who led efforts to secure the new £16 million arena at Edinburgh Castle esplanade has been put in charge of Scotland’s second “Homecoming” celebrations. Tom Chambers has been hired by Scottish Government agency EventScotland to head up the team responsible for the £5.5 million initiative. To be jointly organised with VisitScotland, which will lead marketing efforts, the year-long drive will coincide with the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup and the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn in 2014.

Mr Chambers spent several years at the Tattoo, which raised money from the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and Edinburgh City Council for the new spectator stands and corporate hospitality boxes. Mr Chambers said: “As with Homecoming 2009, collaborative working will be the key to success in 2014, building on existing Homecoming partnerships and those established during the next few years.” It emerged yesterday that £3m of the overall £5.5m budget was being ringfenced to support Scotland’s events industry. The pot will be part of an extra £10m in VisitScotland’s budget for 2014-15.

A NEW international clan gathering to be staged during the next “Homecoming” celebrations is set to need another £700,000 of public money, The Scotsman can disclose. Stirling Council has revealed the expected bill for the centrepiece of the city’s celebrations to mark the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

Council leaders say it will be modelled on the controversial Edinburgh event, which left a huge trail of debts despite being given £500,000 in grants and an emergency bail-out of £180,000 from the Scottish Government. More than 100 private sector creditors are still a combined £400,000 out of pocket.

Thefull story can be read in The Scotsman!

If the second paragraph is true, how about this as a crazy idea... how about we DON'T have a clan gathering; or, if we do, let the clans who want to take part foot the bill!

AMBITIOUS plans to hold a second Gathering of the Clans during the 2014 Homecoming celebrations have been scrapped, Scotland on Sunday has learned. The Gathering, due to be held in Stirling shortly before the independence referendum, has been dropped amid fears the event could lose money.

Last night Stirling Council leader Corrie McChord said there had been reservations about the cost of the event, which had been estimated at around £700,000. “We were aware of what had happened in 2009 with various organisations, small businesses, the Scottish government and Edinburgh City Council all losing out as a result of the event,” he said.
