Raw Spirit (In Search Of The Perfect Dram).

Can't (as yet) say that I'd recomend this book for one very good reason... the pronunciations of the places and distillerys contained within. You see, the correct way to say the names is listed at the back of the book and everytime (ie page) that you hit upon a 'new name' you end up looking up the correct pronunciation from the back (and saying it to yourself over and over again) ... then you come back to the original page and find that you've 'lost the plot'. :?

eg ... Creag Meagaidh = Craig Meggy

So if the pronunciation was with the names then you would recommend it?

Iain Banks is more famous for his novels... Complicity is about the only one I have read (or at least remember reading as I am sure there was another). He also wrote a few sc-fi stories as Iain M Banks!

To be honest, I can't be sure that that would 'convert' me. I find the book hard going. It's not my normal type of reading material (and I don't mean the top shelf stuff either  ) ... I tend to enjoy 'tales of people who travel in general' rather than 'people who set out on a particular mission' ... at the time I was 'at a loss' for something to read.

There's plenty books written by people who've travelled round Scotland... from the 18th century to the current day! One I am waiting for just now is Alfred Barnard's book about his tour of all the distilleries in Scotland in 1887!

Hi Bruce, oor Neil gave me Espedair Street for my 21st birthday, cos the main character ended up living in Arisaig and as that was where my 21st birthday party was held he thought it appropriate. Turned out it wasn't the only connection to my 21st birthday - on the actual day I was working in Glasgow, and went out for lunch with some of the girls to the Griffin (off Sauchiehall Street) which was mentioned a fair few times in the book.

Lainey xx
