Meanwhile, we've got a Moscow and at least two Californias...

I seem to recall a TV or radio programm about a guy who travelled round the world to visit all the Aberdeens. Can't currently find a reference to it, but there are more examples here:

Linking to a site would have been a lot easier than copying from a book... why didn't I think of that?

There's a "Tobermory" on the "Bruce Peninsula" in Ontario, Canada
and it's twinned with Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

I know that they have an Aviemore in New Zealand, but there is also a Jericho, near Glamis, very tiny place, just a few houses for the farm workers at Nether Hayston.

AFTON
New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Robert Burns' Sweet Afton.
Perhaps ging its name to:

Hi Aulyin

Welcome to the forum, I have been reading your posts with interest.

Found it interesting that not only the same name has been used for the settlement but also that nearby landmarks are similarly names as in 'Black Craig' and 'Black Rock' - perhaps this is quite common, it's something I haven't noticed before.

Thanks for the welcome Hebhunter.

I don't know if the Black Rock is significant but I think I have found a common factor with New Cumnock, Ayrshire and the Cumnock in NSW.

The Arthur Memorial UF Church, which sits on the site of Cumnock Castle was built in 1912/13 with the help of money from the Arthur family, one of whom had moved to NSW.
=======================================================
http://www.littleriver-landcare.org.au/ ... istory.pdf
Cumnock, NSW was established during the 1860s

D. McDonald (1968) They Came to a Valley
J. Marriott (1993) The Crossroads - The History of Cumnock

Hugh ARTHUR was born in 1828 in Benston Farm, New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. He died in 1898 in "Curra", Peak Hill, New South Wales, Australia. Hugh sailed for Australia in 1848 aged 20, and worked for seven years before taking up a block of land "Burr" at Strathbogie in 1855. This was sheep and mining country. Hugh returned to Scotland and married his neighbour, Wilhelmina Janet Houston from Garclough, a neighbouring farm on the 5th of May 1859. Both of Hugh's parents were now deceased, but his brother William from Well Hill and his wife's brother John Houston witnessed the marriage.

Cheers, Aulyin
ps The nearby Arthurville, NSW was named after the Duke of Wellington (probably)

One of Hugh Arthur's brothers, William, was born at Wellhill farm, New Cumnock, Ayrshire in 1810 and died at his home, Arthur's Seat, Pathhead, New Cumnock, 1894.

He included in his will: "....to the Deacons' Court of the Free Church Congregation in the Castle of New Cumnock for the purpose of repairing, improving, enlarging or rebuilding the Free Church at New Cumnock.

Another brother, J F Arthur Esq. M.D. C.S.I., born c.1807 and died at Lochside House, New Cumnock 26th July 1886 aged 79 years.
This hero of Luckow also left quite a large amount of money in his will.

Cheers, Aulyin
