Sutherland

This large area in the northern Highlands was, along with Caithness, once under the rule of Norway and was referred to as their southern land.

During the early part of the 19th century, the 1st Duke and Duchess of Sutherland gained notoriety due to the way they, along with their factor Patrick Sellar, handled their part in the Highland Clearances. About 15,000 of their tenants were evicted, some of whom died of hunger and exposure; the people were replaced by 200,000 sheep. A statue of the duke stands on Beinn Bhragaidh, overlooking Golspie.
