West LothianWest Lothian, was formerly known as Linlithgowshire, lies to the west of Edinburgh, with its boundaries marked by the Firth of Forth, between South Queensferry and Bo'ness, in the north, and the Pentland Hills in the south; the Rivers Almond and Avon mark the eastern and western boundaries. The main road that passes through the area is the M8, while the A89 runs almost alongside, passing through Broxburn and Bathgate before heading into Lanarkshire. To the south the A71, which passes Livingston and a few smaller towns, also heads into Lanarkshire. To the north the M9 makes its way from the west of Edinburgh, bypassing Linlithgow, into the Falkirk area where it crosses the River Avon. The A904, which heads west from South Queensferry, runs nearby also passing into the Falkirk area, where the A803 heads roughly southwest to Linlithgow and then also crosses the River Avon. Lying to the south of Linlithgow are the Bathgate Hills with Beecraigs Country Park at their centre; the Almondell & Calderwood Country Park also lies within the county. Also prominent within the area are the many bings, like the Five Sisters below, which are a result of West Lothian being the centre of the shale-oil industry.
