Tranent
Tranent was the location of one of the first coal mines in
Scotland. During the Battle of Pinkie in 1547 locals hid in one of the mines,
but soldiers lit fires at the opening and suffocated all inside.
In 1590, Baillie David Seton was suspicious of a servant's
ability to heal the sick. He had her tortured until she confessed to being a
witch and implicating others, including a teacher and a midwife. They had
supposedly plotted to kill James VI and his wife, Anne
of Denmark. The Earl of Bothwell was also implicated in the plot. He was
imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle, but managed to
escape.
In 1797 eleven people were killed during a protest led by
Jackie Crookston. A statue stands in the town showing her beating her drum.
