South Queensferry
South Queensferry is located on the south side of the Firth of Forth at the southern end of the rail and road bridges. Before these were built it was the crossing point for the
ferry set up by Queen Margaret for her frequent trips between her palaces in
Edinburgh and
Dunfermline. A small museum contains relics of the town's history and
information on the building of the two bridges.
From Hawes Pier, to the west of the rail bridge, the ferry
Maid of the Forth heads to
Inchcolm Island. The Hawes Inn was referred to by Sir Walter Scott in one of
his books; Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Kidnapped whilst staying at the inn.
To the west is the Hopetoun
House estate which belongs to the
Marquis of Linlithgow. To the east is Dalmeny which belongs to the Moubray
family. To the south is the twelfth century Dundas Castle. Further to the west of South Queensferry is the village of Blackness and it's
castle, with Linlithgow
about four miles inland. The House of the Binns is
also nearby.
