Hailes Castle

Hailes CastleRiver Tyne from Hailes CastleBuilt in the thirteenth century, as a fortified manor house, on the bank of the River Tyne near East Linton.

It once belonged to the Hepburn family, who added the square tower and curtain wall. In 1567 James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, brought Mary, Queen of Scots, here.

The castle was dismantled by Cromwell's army in 1650.

It is looked after by Historic Scotland.
