East Linton

East Linton is a town in East Lothian and is located on the western side of the River Tyne, at the point where a 16th century bridge carried the Great North Road, which runs from Edinburgh to London, across the river. Two main roads, including the main Edinburgh London road, now bypass the town, each crossing the Tyne on bridges upstream from the old bridge.

Back in East Linton, the River Tyne provided power for a number of mills that developed in the area over the years; this included Preston Mill on the eastern edge of the town that is now looked after by the National Trust for Scotland, as is the nearby Phantassie Doocot.

A short distance from East Linton, standing on the southern (opposite) side of the Tyne, is the remains of the 13th century Hailes Castle. Both the castle and the town are overlooked by the 221m/724 feet Traprain Law.
