House of the Binns

The House of the Binns is located in West Lothian, about 8km/5 miles west of South Queensferry. The existing house, which was built by Thomas Dalyell, an Edinburgh merchant, replaced an earlier one on the same site. His son, General Tam Dalyell, extended the house later in the seventeenth century. Further extensions in the 18th and early 19th centuries with the result that little is visible of the 17th century work.

The tower on Binns Hill was built in 1826 by Sir James Dalyell, 5th Baronet, as a wager with one of the Hope family for £29 10s.
