Lochranza

Loch Ranza
(See the galleries for more photos of  the Isle of Arran!)

Lochranza sits at the head of Loch Ranza, the loch of the safe anchorage, at the northern end of the Isle of Arran. The remains of the 13th century Lochranza Castle sit on the edge of the loch; it is said that Robert the Bruce stayed here at some point in 1306 and caves on Arran are one of the possible locations for his legendary meeting with a spider.

Lochranza is also the site of the islands only distillery, which was opened in 1995. The pier, to the northeast of the village, is used as the ferry point for passengers travelling to and from Claonaig on the Kintyre peninsula; this pier was rebuilt in 2003 to allow larger vessels, such as the Paddle Steamer Waverley, to call at Lochranza.
