Mull

Mull is one of the largest of the Inner Hebrides lying to the west of Oban, separated from the mainland by the Firth of Lorn.

There is a regular ferry service from Oban to Craignure on the eastern side of the island. To the northwest is a further ferry service, which runs between Fishnish and Lochaline on the Morvern peninsula.

Heading south from Craignure the road passes Torosay Castle, with Duart Castle situated on a small peninsula further to the east. At this point the A849 starts to turn west and heads through Glen More to the eastern end of Loch Scridain; the road follows the southern side of the loch and continues through the Ross of Mull to Fionnphort, the ferry terminal for the island of Iona.

Ben More, which stands at the western end of Glen More and just east of Loch Scridain, is the highest hill on Mull. At 966m it also happens to be a Munro; Mull is the only island, apart from Skye, that boasts a hill of this size.

Between Ben More and Loch Scridain, the B8035 splits off from the A849 and heads along the northern side of the loch to Killiemore; this road then heads northwest to Balnahard on the southern side of Loch na Keal. At this point, the small island of Inchkenneth lies to the west with the much larger Ulva to the north; Little Colonsay and Staffa both lie further to the west; Gometra lies to the west of Ulva while the Treshnish Isles lie even further west.

The B8035 follows the southern side of Loch na Keal to Gruline at the head of the loch. From there it continues the short distance east to rejoin the A849 near Salen on the northeast coast of Mull. From Gruline the B8073 continues round the northern side of Loch na Keal. The road then heads northwest, alongside Loch Tuath, which lies between Mull and Ulva. Finally the B8073 heads round the northern end of the island to reach Tobermory.

The A849 heads southeast from Tobermory along the Sound of Mull, which separates Mull from the mainland, leading back to Craignure.
