Cramond Island
Cramond Island is a tidal island that sits in the
Firth of
Forth to the north of Cramond. The island is is a third of a mile/half a kilometer long and is reached by a raised causeway that can be crossed when the
tide is out; the crossing itself is a mile/1½km long and details of the tide
times can be checked on a notice board at the start of the causeway.
The walkway is lined with a series of concrete pyramids
that are known as the Dragon’s Teeth; these, along with the causeway
itself, were constructed as an anti-submarine defence during Second World War.
Other buildings on the island were built at this time as part of a coastal
battery; these include gun emplacements and magazine stores. Similar buildings
were constructed on Inchmickery, another island in the Firth of Forth that lies
to the northeast of Cramond Island.
