Footpaths of Scotland

A network of footpaths and tracks cross the country, including old drove roads used for moving cattle, that have been used to create a series of long distance routes that are used for leisure activities. Note that not all of these walks are sign-posted along the route; those that are are marked (S) in the list below:

  • Cape Wrath Trail - 300 km from Fort William to Cape Wrath.
  • Cateran Trail - 103km/64 miles starting and finishing in Blairgowrie (S).
  • Central Scottish Way - 251 km from Milngavie to Byrness in Northumbria.
  • Cowal Way - 75 km from from Portavadie to Ardgartan in the Cowal peninsula.
  • Fife Coastal Path - from North Queensferry to Crail (S).
  • Great Glen Way - 117 km/73 miles from Fort William to Inverness (S).
  • John Buchan Way - 22 km/13 miles from Peebles to Broughton in the Scottish Borders.
  • Kintyre Way - 141 km/87 miles from Tarbert to Dunaverty Bay, near Southend, in the Kintyre peninsula (S).
  • Rob Roy Way - 79 miles from Drymen to Pitlochry.
  • Southern Upland Way - 340 km/212 miles from Portpatrick, on the west coast of Dumfries and Galloway, to Cockburnspath, on the east coast of the Scottish Borders.
  • Speyside Way - 135 km/84 miles from Buckie to Aviemore.
  • St. Cuthbert's Way - 100 km/62.5 miles from Melrose in the Scottish Borders, crossing the border in to England near Kirk Yetholm and continuing to Lindisfarne on the Holy Island off the coast of Northuberland.
  • West Highland Way - 152 km/95 mile walk from Milngavie, just outside Glasgow, to Fort William.
  • West Island Way - 42km/26 miles from Kilchattan Bay to Port Bannatyne on the island of Bute (S).

As well the routes mentioned above, the final part of the 429 km/267 miles Pennine Way crosses in to Scotland near its finishing point, Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. The 241 km Cumbria Coastal Way finishes at Gretna Green in Dumfries and Galloway.

While it is possible to do parts of each of the above as shorter walks, it is advisable to check the availability of public transport first.
