St. Andrews Castle

Situated to the north of the cathedral is the castle which was built around 1200 as part of the palace for the Bishops and Archbishops. It was extended over the following centuries, but has been a ruin since the 17th century.

Most of what remains dates from the 16th century, apart from the Fore Tower which is from the 14th.

George Wishart was burned at the stake - his initials are marked in the cobbles below Cardinal Beaton's palace, which is in the castle.

Beaton was murdered in the castle and his body hung over the battlements. Later his body was thrown into the dungeons and salted.
