Southern Fife

Kincardine sits in the southwest corner of Fife, at the point where the Kincardine Bridge carries the A876 across the emerging Firth of Forth. At the northern side of the bridge, the A985 heads east, bypassing Kincardine itself, to a roundabout just east of the town. From this point the A985 continues east, following closely to the southern coast of Fife to Rosyth, while the A977 heads west in to Kincardine itself before then heading northeast to Kinross. Back at the roundabout, a minor road also branches off to the southeast; this road passes through Culross before rejoining the A985 further east.

After the A985 and the road through Culross rejoin, another roundabout is soon met; from here the A994 heads slightly northeast, through Cairneyhill and Crossford to Dunfermline. The A977 that had headed northeast from Kincardine to Kinross meets the A907, which in turn heads east, passing through Comrie, to join with the A994 near Dunfermline; the other branch of the A907 heads west in to Clackmannanshire. Returning to the roundabout where the A994 split off, the A985 heads southeast and passes through Crombie before another minor road splits off to the south; this latter road passes through Charlestown and Limekilns before it too rejoins the A985. Near this point another road, the B9156, heads north offering another approach to Dunfermline.

Eventually the A985 reaches Rosyth and from there the A823 heads north to Dunfermline and the B980 heads south, passing under the Forth Road Bridge, to North Queensferry. To the east of Rosyth, the A921 heads towards Inverkeithing, being separated from its neighbour by the A90 that heads across the Forth Road Bridge itself; Inverkeithing is also joined to North Queensferry, this time by the B981. From Dunfermline, the A823 continues north and then northwest, climbing Knock Hill (362 ft); this is the location of Scotland’s main motor racing circuit, Knockhill. The A823 continues northwest, eventually crossing the path of the A977 Kincardine to Kinross road.

Heading east from Inverkeithing, the A921 also follows closely to the coastline; this road passes through Dalgety Bay, Aberdour, Burntisland and Kinghorn. It was near the last named town that Alexander III fell to his death in 1286; a monument beside the road marks the spot where his body was found. The A921 eventually reaches Kirkcaldy to the northeast of Kinghorn. An alternative route to Kirkcaldy is to follow the A92 east from Dunfermline; this road bypasses all the small villages along the route and doesn’t actually enter Kirkcaldy; the town is approached form the north by either the A910 or the A921. The A92 continues north, passing through Glenrothes and central Fife before crossing the Firth of Tay in to Dundee.

Returning to Kirkcaldy, the A955 heads northeast, following close to the coast and passing through Buckhaven and Methil on the way to Leven. Alternatively, the A915 heads the same way, but further inland and avoiding these three towns; this road continues into the East Neuk of Fife and on to St. Andrews. The A911 connects Leven to Glenrothes to the northwest and continues in that direction towards Loch Lomond and on to Kinross on the western side of the loch. The River Leven flows from Loch Leven to Leven itself where it flows in to the Firth of Forth.
