Ravenscraig Castle
Built overlooking the Firth of
Forth to the east of Kirkcaldy in the 1450s by James II to withstand the
guns available at that time. The front of the castle faces inland and consists
of two D-shaped towers linked by a range with the main entrance. This sits above
a moat that has been cut into the rock.
The
rest of the castle ran along the narrowing headland which falls away steeply on
each side to the shore. On the eastern side a defensive wall has been built
along the curving bay and shingle beach. A doocot
sits above the beach.
The castle was swapped with Lord Sinclair in 1470 by James
III for the Earldom of Orkney. It remained with the Sinclairs until 1898 and
then in 1955 passed into the care of the state.
The castle is situated at the western end of Ravenscraig
Park and is now owned by Historic
Scotland.
