Loch Leven, Kinross
Loch Leven stands to the east of
Kinross and, according to legend, is 11 miles
round; fed by 11 streams; has 11 islands; and is surrounded by 11 hills.
The largest of the islands, St.
Serf's, has the remains of Lochleven Priory.
Lochleven Castle, on Castle Island, is in the care of Historic
Scotland; Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1567 and, with
the help of William Douglas, escaped in 1568. Continuing the 11 theme,
Mary was held prisoner for 11 months!
The River Leven flows from the loch to Largo Bay; during the 19th century the
level of the loch was raised to provide water power for the
industries in the Leven Valley.
