Limekilns

The harbour in Limekilns (left) was developed as a port by merchants in Dunfermline for exports (lime, salt and coal) and imports (wood, wine and glassware).

The Ship Inn featured in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped.

To the west of the town are the lime kilns built into the cliff face c.1780.

Charlestown, further to the west, was built in the 1570s and named after the 5th Earl of Elgin.
