Dunfermline
Royal Palace
The
Royal Palace of Dunfermline
started off as the guest house for Queen Margaret's
Benedictine monastery. It became the Royal Palace in the sixteenth century when
James VI gave it (and the abbey) to his
consort, Queen Anne of Denmark. She appointed William Schaw as Master of Works
to convert it into a palace.
Charles I was born here in 1600 - the last monarch to be
born in Scotland.
