Anstruther

The Royal Burghs of Anstruther Easter and Anstruther Wester lie either side of the harbour making up the largest of the East Neuk fishing villages. In 1929 these burghs amalgamated with Cellardyke and Kilrenny to become the United Burghs of Kilrenny, Anstruther Wester and Anstruther Easter, which is the longest burgh name in Scotland.

The church built in 1634 honours Dr. Thomas Chalmers - the first Moderator of the Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland.

In 1586 buccaneers from Suffolk were involved in theft and a murder here. They were chased to Suffolk by fishermen who brought them back. 4 of the buccaneers were hung in St. Andrews with a further 2 hung in Anstruther.

Anstruther is home to the Scottish Fisheries Museum, which opened in 1969.

A few miles off the coast from Anstruther is the Isle of May. About four miles north of Anstruther is Scotland's Secret Bunker.
