Edinburgh
St. Giles Cathedral
To the north of
Parliament Square is
St. Giles Cathedral, the High Kirk of Edinburgh, which was first founded around 1120
when a Parish church was built to serve Edinburgh during the reign of David I,
though there has been a church on this site since 854.
Most of the present
building dates from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries - including the crown
spire which dominates the city skyline. Originally granted to the Lazarites and
dedicated to St. Giles, the patron saint of lepers, it is no longer a cathedral; it only officially held this title from 1633-38 and 1661-89.
