Edinburgh Castle

Royal Palace

The Royal Palace in Crown Square of Edinburgh Castle was originally built as an extension to David's Tower and was later enlarged to become the royal residence.

Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth to James, later VI of Scotland and I of England, here.

James returned in 1617 for his Golden Jubilee celebrations and for this the palace was completely remodelled both inside and out. New staterooms were created - including the Laich, or lower, Hall on the ground floor, as well as private apartments for the king and queen and lodgings for court officials above.

The Crown Room was built on the first floor to house the Honours of Scotland.
